THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - Fri, 13 Aug 1999
By Benjamin F. Elliott
First, some good news. Last weekend, KTCA St. Paul, MN aired a mini-Doctor Who pledge marathon. It didn't receive much press, even by me. But it actually did quite well. Dan McGrath, owner of the Red Dragon Hobby store and Who supporter up there, had this report:

"KTCA's Doctor Who Mini-Marathon and Pledge Drive was on Saturday, August 7th. Episodes 4-6 of Genesis of the Daleks were shown beginning at 10:15PM. 32 volunteers attended to man the phones for Who. KTCA's goal was 200 pledges, and $10,500 raised. While we came in with just slightly under 200 pledges, I think they'll forgive the minor miss, since in dollars, we raised $11,800, $1,300 over their goal, which we believe was set high for TV drama. The KTCA staff was quite pleased, and it looks like Doctor Who will run for another year. Thank you gifts were a 16 month Who calendar, a Doctor Who music cassette, and the Sirens Of Time audio drama on CD."
The much anticipated WQED Sci-Fi Saturday Night Fever pledge drive aired last Saturday. First they showed Back In The Red, the 3 part Red Dwarf VIII season opener. Then came Remembrance of the Daleks, a 7th Doctor story. Finally came Resurrection of the Daleks, a 5thDoctor story. Their special guest in the studio was John Peel, who has written several Doctor Who novels and novelizations, most notably Dalek stories. As of publication time, I do not know if this pledge drive was successful in its goal of keeping Doctor Who in Pittsburgh or not.
WYBE Philadelphia decided to air Seeds Of Doom episode 6 last week after all. At the beginning of last week's broadcast, they had a nice caption saying approximately "Last week we missed episode 6 of The Seeds Of Doom, but you don't have to. We are showing it again - we heard your call - we are showing them in order. (Thanks to Jim Castelli for the caption wording.) It ran at 11PM, pushing Masque Of Mandragora 1 to 11:30PM and delaying Masque Of Mandragora 2 by a week. Presumably they will air Masque 2 and 3 this week, Masque 4 and Hand 1 next week, etc.
WYIN Gary, IN (Chicago, IL) is not the easiest station to keep track of. I know they like Doctor Who, and they're doing their best for the show, but that doesn't make them column friendly. First, they start airing the Doctor Who episodes 1 week ahead of the information in the regular TV listings. Then, just after I've heard the correct schedule information and change what I put in the column, they finally update their website. Assuming the information on their own website is right, I update what I'm putting in the column again to reflect it. Well, their website's wrong. They are still airing episodes 1 week before they say they will air them. Very confusing.
In case anyone's curious, LPB Louisiana's current policy regarding Doctor Who is that it is being rested now but it will be back at a point yet to be determined. I remember this station saying this when they dropped Doctor Who in October or November 1996, and they did pick it back up in July 1997, 8 or 9 months later. LPB dropped Doctor Who this time back in May, 3 months ago.
UK Gold has dropped its late Friday night broadcast of the 60s Black & White stories, effective immediately. The Sunday morning movie, with its Sunday night rerun on UK Gold Classics, remains.

Two stories on the weekend. The Rani kidnaps the 6th Doctor, accidentally triggering a regeneration. She then tries to use the 7th Doctor to repair a machine that could give her control over time itself. In the second story, Dr. Grace Holloway operates on the 7th Doctor, accidentally triggering a regeneration. She then tries to use the 8th Doctor to repair the emptiness of her failed engagement. On Monday, Resistance Is Useless, a quasi-documentary filled with surviving clips of lost episodes, airs instead of The Tenth Planet part 4, a lost episode. The rest of the week goes to The War Games, where a perfectly ordinary World War I slaughter ground may not be as innocent as it seems.

Later in the week, the Doctor learns from the past that the Daleks plan to exterminate him in the future, which is rapidly approaching the present. Daleks with time travel. Oh dear.

Late Sat 12:30AM EDT Warriors From The Deep ep 3 of 4
Late start due to pledge programming. When last we left the Doctor and Tegan, a biologically impossible monster made out of cloth was on the verge of killing them quite dead. Frankly, it can be more scary when you see a monster, know that it can't possibly do anything, then see it do that thing in spite of what you think.

Fri 9-11:30PM CDT (8-10:30PM MDT) The Masque of Mandragora all 4 eps
Hmm. I thought they aired episode 1 of Masque last week. Anyway, the whole story runs as a pledge special this week. The closest thing to a historical story in the 4th Doctor's era. This installment also introduces the wood-paneled console room, believed to be the inspiration for the room in the Paul McGann movie.

Sat 10-11:30PM MDT "???"

Sat 11PM MDT The Face of Evil movie (more likely The Robots of Death)
Time approximate after pledge programs. The Doctor lands on a planet where he is revered as a god and feared as the demon holding the god prisoner. Flattering, but very problematic, what with everyone trying to kill him and such. Keep an eye out for the Horta. I believe we now know which planet the Cybermen invaded to create the Cybermats.

Sat 5PM, Sun 8AM EDT Terror of the Zygons movie, pt 1 of 2
The 4th Doctor returns to Earth. Everyone dons Scottish garb. If an alien menace is planning to take over the world, at least they chose a picturesque place to show up.

That's it for this week. Until next week, take care.
